昨年のチュルリョーニス国立美術館での展覧会に引き続き、リトアニア共和国ヴィリュニスに位置するリトアニア国立図書館を会場に、「JŪRA YURA Photographs by Kodo CHIJIIWA National Library of Lithuania」展を開催致しますことお知らせします。今回は新たに球磨川沿いにて制作した「Kuma river」（売り上げの一部を熊本県庁健康福祉政策課へ寄付）、並びに今年制作した「Yurameki」シリーズの新作を加え、ヨリータ ルネ氏により再キュレーションしたものを展示いたします。

この展示のタイトル「JŪRA YURA」は、2つの同音異義語から構成されています。「JŪRA」はリトアニア語で「海」を
意味し、「YURA」と発音されます。一方、「Yura」は日本語で「ゆらめく」という意味となります。
「雨の中で立って荒れ狂う海を見ると、私は受動的な存在としての自己を認識する。スケールは少しずつ変化し、時間 は水平に流れてる。そこからは、過去と未来の両方を含む特別な時空間を見渡すことを可能とし、私自身、時間の証人 として、流れの一部に加わりる事で、山を下り、川に流れ込み、海に広がり、空に昇り、土に戻るのです。」 （千々岩 孝道 « JŪRA YURA »寄稿文より抜粋）
作家自身によるエキシビジョンツアーと地域コミュニティーを対象としたワークショップ、カタログ販売並びに、ブローシュア販売の他、展示作品販売も行う予定です。

Following the exhibition at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art last year, we are pleased to announce the opening of the "JŪRA YURA Photographs by Kodo Chijiiwa" exhibition at the National Library of Lithuania in Vilnius, Republic of Lithuania. This time, the exhibition will feature new works from the "Kuma River" series created along the Kuma River (a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Health and Welfare Policy Division of Kumamoto Prefectural Government), as well as new works from the "Yurameki" series created this year, all re-curated by Yolita Rene.
We hope you will take the opportunity to visit the exhibition, despite the distance.

About the Exhibition
The title of this exhibition, "JŪRA YURA," is composed of two homophones. "JŪRA" means "sea" in Lithuanian and is pronounced "YURA." On the other hand, "Yura" means "to sway" in Japanese.
"When I stand in the rain and look at the raging sea, I recognize myself as a passive being. The scale changes gradually, and time flows horizontally. From there, it is possible to overlook a special space-time that includes both the past and the future. As a witness to time, I join the flow, go down the mountain, flow into the river, spread into the sea, rise into the sky, and return to the earth." The exhibition will also include an exhibition tour by the artist himself, a workshop for the local community, catalog sales, brochure sales, and sales of exhibited works.

日本とリトアニアの外交関係が100年を迎えるにあたり、カウナスのM.K.チュルリョーニス国立美術館では、 日本の写真家千々岩 孝道氏の作品を、最も有名なリトアニアの芸術家M.K.チュルリョーニス氏の作品と関連付けて展示 する企画を提案しています。 この展示のタイトル「JŪRA YURA」は、2つの同音異義語から構成されています。
「JŪRA」はリトアニア語で「海」を 意味し、「YURA」と発音されます。一方、「Yura」は日本語で「ゆらめく」という意味となります。
キュレーションはヨリータ ルネ氏が担当し、異なる世代や文化に属する2人のアーティストによる、海の表現という 共通のテーマを中心に対話展開する展示となります。

この作品は、去る2019年にBZH Photoにアーティストインレジデンス作家として招待された際に、フランス・ブルターニュ地方のロギヴィーデラメールという港町で制作した作品となります。
過去に、第4回屋久島国際写真祭やCP+2023におけるシグマブースにて展示を行っております。

I will be exhibiting the "Songs from the Silence" series at the SIGMA booth at PHOTOFAIR Shanghai 2023. This series was created in the port town of Loguivy-de-la-Mer in Brittany, France when I was invited as artist-in-residence to BZH Photo in 2019.
I have previously exhibited this series at the 4th Yakushima International Photo Festival and the SIGMA booth at CP+2023. I am honored to have the opportunity to exhibit alongside photographer Takumi Yoshimura at FOTOFAIR Shanghai and would like to thank Sigma Corporation for this occasion.

2020年1月より約２週間、兵庫県的形市に位置する Art space M1997 に滞在し作品を制作した
「瞬刻のタブロー | Twinkling tableau」を同会場にて2021年9月18日（土）から11月14日（日）の期間、展示致します。
新型コロナの影響により、約一年間延期となった今回の展覧会です。
9月18日に在廊を予定しており、作品と共に皆様にお会いできる時を楽しみにしておりますので、お気軽にご来場ください。
また、今回の制作に辺り惜しみなく協力いただきました的形町の皆様に感謝申し上げます。
"Twinkling tableau" will be exhibited at Art space M1997 located in Matogata City, Hyogo Prefecture from September 18th (Sat) to November 14th (San), 2021.
This exhibition has been postponed for about a year due to the influence of the Covid-19.
I am planning to be in the hall on September 18th, I am looking forward to seeing you with the works, so please feel free to visit us.

J’ai pu découvrir le travail de Kodo Chijiiwa en 2019, lors des Rencontres Photographiques à Arles où le photographe présentait en off une sélection de photographies sur le monde végétal de Yakushima, une petite île au sud du Japon où l’artiste vit depuis 2003. L’ été 2019 il a été également invité par le BZH Photo pour une résidence d’artiste en Bretagne sous l’initiative de Camille Gajate. K.Chijiiwa est aussi le co-fondateur de Yakushima Photography Festival.
Son cycle intitulé « Yurameki » (« tremblement » en japonais) commencé en 2015 lors d’un typhon, réalisé avec son Rolleiflex 2.8 F, en utilisant une double exposition. Ce cycle se poursuit toujours et désormais aussi en dehors du contexte des tempêtes, exprimant l’énergie créatrice de la nature: les métamorphoses végétales et minérales.
Le travail de K.Chijiiwa me semble proche de l’esprit des écrits de Junichirô Tanizaki où l’un et l’autre saisissent la chose elle-même et le halo qui l’entoure. A la manière d’un journal intime, une forme chère à Tanizaki, Chijiiwa enregistre les vibrations de la nature proche, la beauté d’un monde fugace dont la photographie garde seul la mémoire.
Tel « un marin terrestre » il plonge littéralement dans la fureur des éléments déchainés et marche au hasard secoué par les rafales et les embruns de la mer qui brouillent le paysage. Arpenteur des grands vents il a du mal à rester debout, il doit lutter pour conserver son équilibre et ne pas se laisser emporter. Il se livre corps et âme aux convulsions de la nature. Conscient de sa fragilité mais habité par des moments de grâce, il accueille ces phénomènes météorologiques comme des manifestations de la vie ici et maintenant.
K. Chijiwa fixe dans ses photos les énergies variées exprimant visuellement les forces élémentaires qui incarnent la vie : feu, air, terre et eau sous forme de liquide ou de neige. Le photographe est à la source primordiale de toutes ces énergies conjuguées des mondes combinés, animaux, végétaux, minéraux.
Ainsi dans ses photographies figurent l’importance des nuées et des éclaboussures de la mer, où l’air et l’eau fusionnent et se combinent pour donner naissance à un nouvel état de la matière, sorte de « spray » océanique formé de différents éléments conjugués, par une violente synergie de vapeurs d’eau, de vent et de mer transformés en éruption volcanique.
A travers son regard on voit des rayons surgir et disparaître sans cesse comme un soupir de la mer à sa surface désagrégée. En parvenant à dompter visuellement ce souffle, K. Chijiwa capte la respiration de la vie comme un ordre poétique dans un désordre apparent.
Il photographie aussi les traces laissées par la mer lorsqu’elle se retire après ses furies. Fonds marins fantastiques qui laissent des craquelures visibles sur le sol à marée basse, comme les signes avant coureurs de constructions à venir pour de futures sociétés humaines. (Gata, 2021)
Des affleurements étranges surgissent de sols cachés par la neige, paysages singuliers dessinant des calligraphies végétales et mettant en évidence des correspondances entre le monde céleste et le monde terrestre.
« Le temps des végétaux: ils semblent toujours figés, immobiles. On tourne le dos pendant quelques jours, une semaine, leur pose s’est encore précisé, leurs membres multipliés. Leur identité ne fait pas de doute, mais leur forme c’est de mieux en mieux réalisée. »

Le regard de Kodo Chijiiwa sur le monde végétal amplifie ses mouvement silencieux et rend visible la puissance cachée de sa vie interne.
De simples rochers enregistrent des formes et des surfaces travaillées par des micro-organismes datant des temps immémoriaux, traces de végétaux disparus, paysages abstraits sculptés par le vent. Strates de mémoire superposées, représentations figées qui nous questionnent sur l’étendue originelle de la mer en remontant l’échelle du temps. Ici la mémoire du temps se déroule à la vitesse d’un kaléidoscope tourbillonnant.
Le photographe nous questionne sur la signification du temps. Il témoigne que la nature est une vibration unique où l’homme et l’univers sont solidaires et que tout est lié et uni dans la multiplicité du vivant.
Ces interactions incessantes entre les énergies naturelles, les mouvements du corps physique se traduisent en images par des traces photographiques vibrantes comme si leur texture et leur substance avaient été rendues flexibles après avoir été absorbées par les vents.
Kodo Chijiiwa nous convie à des traversées dans les incessantes métamorphoses de la matière afin de nous faire entendre l’acuité du silence.

港町のフランス・ロギヴィーで、ワークショップやディスカッション、コンサートなどのプログラムを盛り込んだ、往来の観光地としてのイメージだけではない、新しいロギヴィーの魅力を再発見できる「BZH PHOTO」が、7月25日（木）から開催される。
本写真祭の開催に先立って、Association BZH PHOTOがアーティスト・イン・レジデンスを作家に提供。日本から招待した写真家による制作および作品展示も企画されている。コートダルモール県での 初の試みであるアーティスト・イン・レジデンスを伴う展⽰は、海・陸・浜辺といったブルターニュの特徴を活かしながら、異⽂化や芸術的な交流の基盤となることを⽬指している。
第一回招待作家は、屋久島国際写真祭の設立者の一人でもある千々岩孝道。活動拠点である屋久島から遠く離れたブルターニュの地で、その土地や住人たちを新しい視点から再発見する。会期中は、展覧会を中心に、一般参加型ワークショップやディスカッションも企画され、盛りだくさんな内容となっている。

The first edition of BZH Photo, an open-air festival of modern photography, is to be held in Loguivy-de-la-Mer in Brittany from 25th-29th July. It highlights the sense of sharing and the intercultural dialogue between the Breton and Japanese coasts.
The festival’s two creators, Camille and Chloé, invited Japanese photographer Kodo Chijiiwa who offers his own leaning and unique perspective on the Côtes-d’Armor through 25 photographs attached to mats and bathed in the Breton spray. Last February, he spent a month in Loguivy-de-la-Mer, a long way from his green island of Yakushima in the south of the Japanese archipelago. Alongside the exhibition, which will run until the end of September, there are a number of other high points during the festival from 25th-29th July, including a participatory photography workshop and a cyanotype workshop. If the public responds favourably, the BZH Photo festival will return for a second edition in 2020 and will invite another foreign artist for a residency in Brittany.
To gain a better understanding of why the festival creators wanted to establish a parallel between Brittany and Japan, Pen Magazine asked Camille a few questions.
Where does your desire to create this new modern photography festival come from, and specifically your desire for it to be held in Brittany?
After spending time working in archives of old photos, I felt the need to share these treasures, but primarily to support the new creators who form part of the modern scene. As for the location being Brittany, its Armorican coasts are breathtakingly beautiful, but I was also lucky enough to receive a warm welcome to Loguivy-de-la-Mer and to meet some great people who gave me the confidence to set up my very first cultural project.
Why did you choose Japanese photographer Kodo Chijiiwa to be patron of the festival?
Kodo Chijiiwa accepted the challenge to open the residency and to translate the emotions and experiences he lived through during his stay in Brittany into images. I came across his work in Arles, which showcased the force of the ocean in Yakushima, and wanted to invite him to come to discover the foreshore so he could offer us his own perspective on our region, with his own sensibility.
What was his approach towards Loguivy-de-la-Mer and towards Brittany in general?
Kodo wrote a very poetic text expressing his feelings, and we decided to display it alongside his photos. He was struck by the beauty and diversity of the landscapes along the coast here, and was touched to see just how mindful the residents are of it. He also admired the respect that they show for their area and the authenticity of the links created by the presence of nature. His vision of Loguivy is delicate and mystical, especially in his technique which involves capturing multiple shots on the same part of the film roll with his Rolleiflex, which lends the photos an ethereal quality.
One of the unique things about the festival is its desire to start an intercultural dialogue. What form does this take?
At the very heart of the festival is the artistic residency. The people of Loguivy have been generous enough to open their doors to a photographer who comes from a faraway place, with his own cultural baggage and curiosity regarding these areas of land (and sea!) that they know so well and that they have been so keen to share with him. Kodo will communicate with the visitors too, both in guided tours of the exhibition and in interactive workshops which offer new ways of looking at his environment. There will also be an interdisciplinary round table event with a host of guests including farmers, oyster farmers, fishermen, rescuers and coastguard workers, all of whom will discuss life on the coast in Brittany and Japan.
